Research Interests

My primary interest is the development of novel user interface techniques that embrace the potential of emerging technologies but that are also grounded in theories of human cognition and studies of real-world work practice. As a result, my research lies at the intersection of three sub-disciplines of human-computer interaction: user interface software and technology (UIST), computer-supported cooperative work, (CSCW) and ubiquitous computing (Ubicomp).

My dissertation research explores the implications of foregrounding activity in user interface design. More specifically, I am interested in the ways that novel user interface design can respond to the challenges raised by transitioning from document- and application-centric models of computing to activity-centric paradigms while still providing fluid computing experiences that reflect real-world knowledge work practices. My primary contributions are systems that instantiate activity-based user interface designs; three specific systems that embody this research agenda include Kimura, the sharing palette, and Giornata.
